10 Books On My TBR Since Before I Started Blogging

Tuesday, August 23, 2016

This week's Top Ten Tuesday is part of The Broke and the Bookish's Weekly Top Ten Tuesday!

1. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
Because it's so dense and no one's forced me to read it, but as an English major I know I should..

2. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
See previous excuse.

3. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
I put off reading this one for a dumb reason: In 8th grade, we were assigned The Hobbit.  My teacher asked us about our judgments on the book solely based on the cover before we had a chance to crack open the pages.  I responded with, "I think it's about a hobo" because I was in the 8th grade. She mocked me and even though I enjoyed the book, I refused to acknowledge that and tore it to shreds in class.  Which is why I put this one off for so long BUT is now ruined because my geeky boyfriend insisted we watched the movie trilogy so now I know everything that happens anyway.  Ugh.
Day 22 of #AugustFantasyChallenge: Goblins or Dwarves.... ✨ This photo is to celebrate my favorite dwarf ever, Gimli! His relationship with Legolas is one of my very favorites. My most loved scenes in The Lord of the Rings involve friendship: Frodo and Sam, Merry and Pippin, & Gimli and Legolas. Their trek through Middle Earth did much for dwarf and elf relations. 😆 And even though I can be very critical of book-to-movie adaptations, this is one exception that actually enriched my experience with these two characters. 💚 ✨ This prompt also provided me with the perfect excuse to showcase one of the THREE books that I won in Abi's @thesqueakycupboard giveaway. I squealed when I received my beautifully wrapped packages!!! Thank you again, my dear friend!!!! If you aren't following Abi, go do it now!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ ✨ Are you shocked that I didn't feature a Funko in my photo? I've complained several times recently that I didn't start collecting Funkos until after the LoTR Pops were vaulted. Voldy offered to stand in for Gandalf, but I informed him that he looks more like Gollum. Let's just say that the teeny Dark Lord took a bit of offense to that comment. He's now watching a marathon of Dance Moms, eating fistfuls of Cap'n Crunch straight out of the box, and refusing to speak to any of us. 😳 ✨ • #LiveLaughBooksAugust - Favorite Fictional Pet: Shadowfax (although I doubt he would ever consider himself to be a pet.) 😉 • #AugustofPages - Book About Innocence: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - I loved watching Frodo grow from an innocent lad to a brave hero. 💕 ✨ #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booknookstagram #bookstagramfeature #bookishfeatures #bibliophile #books #bookish #ilovebooks #bookaddict #bookworm #bookaholic #readersofinstagram #booknerd #lotr #thelordoftherings #gimli #middleearth

4. Life of Pi by Yann Martel
There is no logical reason why I have not read this one yet.  I'm aware my life is incomplete.

5. Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville
This is has been on my reading list since at least 2010.  I have a weird aversion to it but yet it remains.

6. Matilda by Roald Dahl
It's always checked out at the library when I go!  (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

7. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
I have no idea what this story is about, but it's been on virtually every reading list I've ever created.  A friend's mother I wasn't too fond of kept trying to pressure me into reading this novel and I think that's why I've avoided it for so long.

8. Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
It's kind of a shame that I wasn't forced to read this at one point as an English major.  Actually, really sad.  The only Dickens I ever read for school was in freshman year of high school.

9. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
I just know this one is going to make me cry buckets.

10. The Godfather by Mario Puzo
As an Italian New Yorker, I should have been read this in my crib, huh?

  1. I performed in Oliver Twist when my school did it as a play way back when and I had to read it for it! I also read the first book in the LOTR series, and I got halfway through the second and stopped for some reason!!

    1. That happened to me with Harry Potter. It wasn't until years and years later that I went back!

  2. I loved the movie of Life of Pi and I loved it, but there are so many mixed reviews of the book, I don't know what to expect. There are so many books I haven't read on this list that I just know I should - there's so much praise for Charles Dickens, but I haven't read a single one of his books!
    Great list :)

    1. You have to read something from Dickens! It can be a tough-going sometimes because they can be so long, but he's worth it.

  3. I have that Dostoevsky and another Dickens on my list too.

  4. This is a great selection. I share a lot of these TBRs... however, I have made my way through some of them too. I read Matilda when I was about 9 and adored it so much that I insisted on reading it in the bath... then accidentally played submarines with it! Also, I'm a massive Dickens fan, I love the lengthy description, but it's often thought of as too dry, I'd recommend A Tale of Two Cities as well as Oliver Twist :)

    1. hahahah poor Matilda! I've seen the movie but I heard it's nothing like it. I loved A Tale of Two Cities. It's the book that first drove my love for reading.

  5. I have a BA in English and I have a hard time with the classics, too. Most of them are just soooo boring! I love LOTR, LIFE OF PI, MATILDA, and THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS. The last two are short, so easy to read quickly. Good luck with all these!

  6. Your list is great, and the greatest part is that you are a kindred spirit...! I also have never read The Lord of the Rings. We do appear to be in the minority however... Rebecca is a classic yes, but what a great read. Life of Pi as well. I also haven't read The boy with the striped pajamas. Oops. 9. I had to read quite a few of these as assigned readings when I was in college. Crime and Punishment is a pretty great read, as is Oliver Twist. I have to say I have mixed feelings about Moby Dick - certain parts of it are amazing, but then there are some very detailed scientific chapters that kind of put me off a bit. I haven't read The Godfather or War and Peace either, but really need to someday. Great list!
