Quotes That Inspire Me

I have to admit I snagged this idea from Graceful Coffee (she's a genius!).  I'm a quote-aholic.  I actually have my own Tumblr page full of quotes from books I read that have moved me.  Fun fact: my Tumblr is named after a quote from The Picture of Dorian Gray.  I briefly flirted with having the quote tattooed on my hip.

I really like quotes but what I enjoy more is discovering my own quotes.  Too often, I think we pin quotes on Pinterest or come across them on some Internet site and we don't understand the true meaning behind the words.  More often than not, you find out the quote isn't real or is attributed to the wrong person (like when I named this blog!).  So, all of my quotes are certified because I read them, fell in love with the words, and jotted them down.

Listed below are some quotes that truly inspire me and ring through my head whenever I need them.

We accept the love we think we deserve.
- Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being A Wallflower

We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.  All art is quite useless.
- Oscar Wilde, the preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray

It isn’t possible to love and to part. You will wish that it was. You can transmute love, ignore it, muddle it, but you can never pull it out of you. I know by experience that the poets are right: love is eternal.
- E.M. Forrester, A Room With A View

But ask yourself this: Have you ever lost someone you love and wanted one more conversation, one more chance to make up for the time when you thought they would be here forever? If so, then you know you could go your whole life collecting days, and none will outweigh the one you wish you had back.
- Mitch Albom, For One More Day

I really do think that love is the best thing in the world, except cough drops. But I also have to say, for the umpty-umpth time, that life isn’t fair. It’s just fairer than death that’s all.
- William Goldman, The Princess Bride

Sometimes I just wanted to raise my hands and stop. But stop what? Maybe just growing up.
- Patti Smith, Just Kids

The novel is not the author's confession; it is an investigation of human life in the trap the world has become.
- Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

But I’ll tell you a terrible secret–Are you listening to me? There isn’t anyone out there who isn’t Seymour’s Fat Lady. That includes your Professor Tupper, buddy. And all his goddam cousins by the dozens. There isn’t anyone anywhere that isn’t Seymour’s Fat Lady. Don’t you know that? Don’t you know that goddam secret yet? And don’t you know–listen to me, now–don’t you know who that Fat Lady really is?…Ah, buddy. Ah, buddy. It’s Christ Himself. Christ Himself, buddy.
- J.D. Salinger, Franny & Zooey

If our dream comes true, we are almost afraid to believe it; for that is the best of all good fortune, and nothing better can happen to any of us.
- Willa Cather, The Song of the Lark

It didn’t matter in the end how old they had been, or that they were girls, but only that we had loved them, and that they hadn’t heard us calling, still do not hear us, up here in the tree house, with our thinning hair and soft bellies, calling them out of those rooms where they went to be alone for all time, alone in suicide, which is deeper than death, and where we will never find the pieces to put them back together.
- Jeffrey Eugenides, The Virgin Suicides

Actually that’s my secret–I can’t even talk about you to anybody because I don’t want any more people to know how wonderful you are.
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tender is the Night

I am not your missing piece. I am nobody’s piece. I am my own piece. And even if I was somebody’s missing piece, I don’t think I’d be yours.
- Shel Silverstein, The Missing Piece

  1. A beautiful collection of quotations :) I love to read too but I've never thought of collecting quotations before, I might give it a try! I'm halfway through The Goldfinch and it would have been a great starting point. X

    1. Ooh, The Goldfinch? I'll have to try that one out if you think it's quote worthy! Once you start, you can't stop. Trust me!
